AO5 - Self Discipline

Sports Relief - 12 hour Charity run.

Wednesday 22nd February 2012
In our first lesson, we began to plan our charity event, by listing parts that will make up the day, e.g. emailing people, contacting pupils about the event, sponsorships etc. We then delegated these sections to work on to pairs, me and Jamie have been given a list to sort, these being; Email the headteacher and Sport teachers, the management team of Aquaterra (the leisure centre for after school at Culverhay) and the Governors of the school.

With these jobs sorted, me and Jamie will send out emails which will hopefully be accepted by the Headteacher and leisure centre management team which will then enable us to continue with the planning.
Turning up on time, I was able to listen to all of the information provided by the teacher and I then used this to get my task under way by emailing important people to allow us to do the event.

Monday 27th February 2012
In my first session of fitness training for the charity event, I went into the old gym for some dynamic stretching (heel flicks, high knees). After this I went back into the gym and got on the treadmill and warmed up for 5 minutes at the speed of 7.5kmh.
On completion of the 5 minute warm-up, we were set a time of 30 minutes to run at a speed of 8kmh, me and 3 others (George, Nathan and Cameron) were on the treadmill, 3 were on the cross trainers (Jamie, Ashley and Adam) and then there was Bon on the exercise bikes.
After completing the 30 minute session, I then had a cool down, by reducing the speed from 8kmh down to a walking pace and then stopped, I then performed some static stretches (hamstrings, Quadriceps and Gastrocnemius), these being the main muscles I used for the run.
This being the groups first training session, I made sure I turned up just before the time we had to, this allowed me to warm up and perform some dynamic stretches . I also ensured I had my kit which prevented any restriction while running, wearing the correct kit also put me in th frame of mind for the session.

Thursday 1st March 2012
In this lesson, I had to email the IT management regarding some equipment such as; digital cameras, video recorder and a tripod so we could record the day of the event, this will then be used as evidence for ours sponsors and coursework.
After emailing IT management, I then started proposing an email to send to Paul Cracknell, this was to ask whether we could hire the old gym, and the exercise machines.
After having todays lesson planning and emailing more people, at lunchtime, the group went to the gym for another training session, this time the four people from the treadmill swapping machines with the people on the Cross trainers.
We organised this lay out of people swapping as we decided everyone needed equal time on each machine as we will be swapping every period of time on the day of the event, I also ensured I turned up on time with the correct kit as otherwise my grade would drop and others may get confused of what time we have to turn up and what machine to go on.

Wednesday 7th March 2012
Today, me and Jamie have been rushing around school, firstly we tried to ring Aquaterra multiple times but there was no answer from the Culverhay Sports Centre or the Baths Sports Centre, so we now have to organise a meeting after school with the Aquaterre staff regarding the hire of the equipment and old gym.
We then found the caretakers and asked whether they wold be able to open the schools sports centre at arounf 04:30am, so everyone can turn up and get ready for the day.
IT managment was next on the list, we were following up on our emails which were not responded to regarding the hire of recording equipment (Digital camera, video recorder and a tripod) this would allow us to video our progress and the actual run.
Following up all of these, I believe takes a lot of self discipline as me and Jamie had to complete very important tasks in and out of the lessons provided by the teacher, when we didnt receive emails back from people we decided to meet them and tell them about our intentions of what we wanted to do, why and how we are going to do it.

Thursday 8th March 2012
Today , I have sent an email to Mr Thomson (The headteacher) to ask whether the school could possibly have  a mufti day on Monday 26th March, this can help towards raising money for our target of £500.
To this date, I have raised   £32.05 from sponsorships, some being teachers and some being my peers who are not participating in the Sport relief run.
I believe that with the self-discilpline I have had over the last few lessons, I have become much more independent outside of the class and have put my own time and effort into raising some money for the charity.

Monday 12th March 2012
Monday morning, I turned up to the gym on time, got changed into my Culverhay T-shirt, shorts and then put my trainers on, I made sure I turnt up early so I could warm-up. I then got onto the cross trainer where I worked at 70RPM, 10 over the set pace to run at as I wanted to work my body to work harder, allowing my muscular and Cardio Vascular endurance to improve.
After this session, I am going to have a break for around one hour and then get on the treadmill for 30 minutes, I may run towards the 45 minute mark as I want to ensure I am at the fittest I can possibly be for when the event comes around.
With this discipline, punctuality and time keeping, I turned up on time, with the correct kit and worked the hardest I could to gain the fitness level I wanted for the day of the charity event. This being the 26th March.

Thursday 15th March 2012
Todays lesson, men and Jamie hae sent further emails to Aquaterra regarding the use of spin bikes for other studetns in the school to have a go and help support us throughout the run. We then sent The Bath Chronicle an email asking whether they could possibly advertise our charity run plans (day, times and what we are doing) in their paper, this could possibly attract donations from outside of the school.
With the self-discipline I have shown, I believe that the emailing section of the task has been done well and accurately, every person that needed to know about the event does know and has emailed back with an answer, me and Jamie has to be persistent with keeping them up to date with all information, reliability and the hard work ethic will show through on the day if everything goes according to plan, which I believe it will be.

Friday 16th March 2012
In this lesson, I had to complete 1 and a half hours of running over the course of the day, I turned up at 8 in the morning and got on the Treadmill for my first session, this take alot of discipline to do as I got out of bed earlier and prepared myself for the day ahead.
After completing an early sessiom, I then had one hour break and then yet another 30 minutes of running, this being on the Cross-trainer, I then had a lesson which I used as my resting period and then got back into the gym and onto the treadmill.
I believe that my self-discipline has improved and my self esteem has increased, this making me want to do more running and work to the best of my abilities, also, turning up with the correct kit shows that iw as also punctual and reliable.

Tuesday 20th March 2012
Today, Mr Hooper has sent an email around setting a target of 8 sessions (pass) 9 sessions (Merit) and 10 sessions being a Distinction. I have personally chose to go for the full 10, giving me a grade of Distinction.
I decided to complete 4 thirty minute periods, I made sure that after these runs, I performed a cool-down consisting of static stretches and rehydrated myself with bottle of water.
I made sure that I got into school early so I could do my first thirty minutes, I then spread them out after every 1 hours rest.
With my self esteem increased, and the self discipline I have shown over the last few weeks, I did not want to drop off and fall behind on the running as I could put myself at the risk of losing the fitness levels I have gained.

Wednesday 21st March 2012
After completing 4 thirty minute running sessions on tuesday, I decided to complete a further 3 to cut down the amount I had to do for the last 2 days before a well deserved weekend rest ready for the Charity run on Monday 26th.
I got into school first thing, this being at around 08:00am, this allowing me to have plenty of rest from the start of the day to the end where I will complete my 3rd run.
I believe my self determination and discipline enabled me to work to the best of my ability, this allowing my endurance to improve ready for the run.

Thursday 22nd March 2012
With only 3 more fitness training sessions to go, I thought it would be best to do 1 run today as I had a football match after  school, so this would mean I have 2 more to do tomorrow, I made sure I completed this session as soon as I could in the day, this being the time of 8:15am so I will finish on time for my first lesson.
With my self-dicipline, I was able to get up early, get to school and get changed to do the run, and after completing all the other sessions, I didn't want to fall behind as I would not have gained the grade (Distinction) that I want.

Friday 23rd March 2012
The last day of training before the Charity run, I had 2 running lessons to complete to reach the target of 10 set by Mr Hooper.
I made sure I was in at 8am to complete my first session, with the correct kit and footwear, this giving me the final boost of energy I needed to complete this week of intense running in preparation of the charity run.
I then had 1 hour of break before I came back into the Gym where I got onto the treadmill, this being the machine where you had to work the most to finish the full 30 minutes.
I believe that throughout the week of the running and punctuality of using the correct footwear and kit and my self discipline of ensuring I turn up on time or early for lessons, I put in as much effort as i possibly could and this resulted in me improving my fitness and gaining the grade that I wanted for this task within the Unit.

Monday 26th March 2012 - The Charity Run!
The day of the run for Sport Relief, I made sure that I went to bed early the night before to refill all my energy ready for the morning, I set my alarm for 03:30am, this allowing me time to wake up, have breakfast, have a quick wash and brush my teeth and then  get out of the door for 04:30 to get picked up and given a lift to school to prepare for the run.
I made sure I had enough sleep so I was in a good mood to ensure I would work hard, if I had less sleep I would have been tired resulting in me not putting in as much effort.
After i got to school, I had some more food to wake me up abit more, and then everyone was organised into groups of threes, these groups being numbered 1, 2 and 3, number 1's went on the machines for the first thirty minutes, group 2 then got on and so on.
This allowing everyone rest and eating time throughout the day.
Self-discipline was key throughout the whole day, as I was completing my runs and then getting off making sure I eat for energy a good 45 minutes before running again, I ensured I kept my muscles warm, this preventing the chances of injury.
As the time edged closer to the 12 hour mark, some people were tiring a bit or needed to go to the toilet, meaning that someone else had to take over for someone, I stood in allowing others to go and have a quick rest or go to the toilet.
This self-discipline made me push through and and support others meanwhile keeping the machines going.
Also, turning up to every lessona dn running session, I was very reliable on the planning and training for the event meaning that people would know that I could run for them at any time if they neeede breaks or neeede to get something half way through a run etc.

I believe that I showed self-discipline and punctuality throughout this whole task over the last few weeks, I also put in all my effort to ensure I was gaining fitness to get me ready for the day, I also changed my diet leading up to the event, so I would have a high level of energy to use whilst im training. Changing my lifestyle for the charity event.

This link below is the presentation which was used to present to the school's pupils to let them know about the event and how we are raising money,  without this presentation, they may have been told my teacherss/tutors but could have forgot, but with the assembly just before the event, it will stick in their minds.

Your extensive blogging and independant style of work is setting you up nicely for another distinction AO. But to guarantee this you must keep analysing how your self discipline has impacted upon your performance as you have done in certain sections. E.g. as I was self disciplined enough to have good punctuality I had time to complete a 30minute run and blog my work. If O had been late . . . . . .

You have added further to your blog with excellent details. You also need to add photo's of training and the day as well as your witness statement, the posters around school, the powerpoint presentation you delievered as an assembly and anything else you deem neccassary.

    Regards
